Tea Tree Essential Oil: DIY Recipes
Tea tree essential oil is always on hand at my house. It’s been a staple for over 30 years.
Wound Wash
My top go-to for cuts and wounds in general. I used tea tree essential oil all the time when my kids were little. Kids will be kids and that means scraped knees, road rash, scratches, insect bites… You get the picture !
Tea tree oil contains a compound called terpinen-4-ol, which is known to kill certain bacteria and viruses.
The easiest way is to put the plug in your basin, run some warm water in there. It doesn’t really matter how much, just a bit in the bottom. Add a few drops of tea tree essential oil, swoosh it round with your hand, soak a cotton pad in there and dab it on the wound. Keep washing that wound, especially if there’s dirt in there. You’ll have a pretty good idea when enough is enough.
Then, I guess, make that small human a hot chocolate or cold drink, administer cuddles and maybe a bandaid if need be.
Vaporiser
In a vaporiser, I’d look to add a total of around 5 drops into the water. If you have a strong smelling essential oil, cut it back to maybe only 1 drop of that one.
Use a few drops of Tea Tree essential oil and citronella for an insect repellant.
Enjoy the air-purifying benefits and calming scent of tea tree oil by combining it with lavender and add to your vaporiser. Try 3 drops tea tree, 4 drops lavender.
Try 2 drops tea tree, 2 drops sandalwood, 1 drop cypress to help relieve breathing with colds and flu type symptoms.
For respiratory ailments, try 3 drops tea tree, 2 drops eucalyptus, 1 drop Scots pine.

Household
Add around 10 drops to the final rinse of your laundry cycle. Helps disinfect any bugs, especially if you have a wheezy member of the family.
Add 2 - 4 drops to a muslin cloth and use in the tumble dryer.
For a carpet freshener, add 2.5 ml lavender essential oil, 1.25ml tea tree essential oil, 1.25ml sweet orange essential oil to 250ml baking soda. Mix thoroughly, pack into a glass jar and leave for at least 24 hours for the oils to penetrate the baking soda. Sprinkle over your carpet and leave for 20 minutes before vacuuming.
In The Bath
This is a very exciting area because the options are endless. A bath is the ultimate self-care ritual. It’s such a simple, yet decadent, ceremony.
For added luxury, why not add a half cup of milk to your bath or a tablespoon of manuka honey. Both of these have great skin smoothing properties on their own. Add some flower petals, light a candle. Take a glass of wine with you. Maybe take your Significant Other with you. Now you’re talking !
I’d look to add around 10 drops in total.
Try some of these combos:
Antiviral - tea tree, lavender, eucalyptus
Antibacterial - tea tree, lemon, eucalyptus, clove
Deodorising - tea tree, eucalyptus, lavender, peppermint
Can you see why tea tree essential oil is such a must have in a home first aid kid !
I hope you Google some more recipes and information to add to your expanding knowledge of essential oils.
